Understanding the Role of Interventional Radiology in Vascular Treatment

Jun 21, 2023Vascular Disease

Many people assume surgery is the only option when it comes to vascular health issues. However, thanks to advancements in medical technology, non-surgical options are now available that provide a safer, less invasive alternative to traditional surgery. One such option is interventional radiology. Interventional radiology is a specialized field of medicine that uses advanced imaging techniques to diagnose, treat, and manage various conditions, including vascular disease.

Dr. Ayar is a board-certified interventional radiologist specializing in minimally invasive procedures to diagnose and treat vascular conditions. Our advanced techniques involve using catheters and imaging technology, such as X-rays and ultrasound, to guide our procedures. This allows us to ensure pinpoint accuracy in our treatments.

The Role of Interventional Radiology in Vascular Treatment

Interventional radiology often provides a less invasive alternative to traditional surgery, and it can be highly effective for diagnosing and treating a wide range of vascular conditions, including:

Peripheral Arterial Disease

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) occurs when plaque buildup in the arteries can cause a narrowing or blockage of blood flow to the limbs. Coastal Vascular Center offers minimally invasive treatment options for PAD, including angioplasty and stenting.

In angioplasty, a catheter is inserted into the artery and directed to the blockage site. Once it is in place, a balloon on the end of the catheter is inflated to compress the plaque and widen the artery. In some cases, a stent is also used to help keep the artery open.

Deep Vein Thrombosis

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot that develops in a deep vein, most commonly in the lower leg. If left untreated, DVT can be life-threatening. Coastal Vascular Center offers minimally invasive treatment options, including catheter-directed thrombolysis. This procedure involves using a catheter to inject clot-busting medication directly into the affected vein.

Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are swollen, twisted veins visible under the skin’s surface. They are often caused by weakened valves in the veins that allow blood to flow backward, where it pools and causes swelling. Coastal Vascular Center offers various minimally invasive treatment options for varicose veins, including radiofrequency ablation and endovenous laser treatment.

In radiofrequency ablation, the diseased vein receives a catheter. Once in place, a special device applies radiofrequency energy to the vein wall, causing it to collapse and seal shut.

Another treatment is Endovenous laser. This treatment is a similar procedure that uses a laser to shut the diseased vein. By doing this the blood reroutes to healthy veins.

Benefits of Interventional Radiology for Vascular Treatment

For many patients, interventional radiology procedures offer several benefits over traditional surgery, including:

  • Minimally invasive procedures result in less pain and a lower risk of complications
  • Reduced recovery time, allowing patients to return to their everyday lives quickly
  • Shorter hospital stays
  • High success rates with many procedures providing durable results
