What Is Sclerotherapy?
In plain terms, sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive treatment used to reduce or eliminate spider veins and treat select small varicose veins. A specialized solution is injected into the targeted vein using a very small needle. That solution irritates the vein lining, causing the vein to seal closed — and over time it gradually fades from view.
Once the treated vein closes, blood naturally reroutes through healthier veins nearby. Your body reabsorbs the closed vein over the following weeks to months, leaving your skin clearer and smoother. The procedure is performed right in our office and does not require anesthesia, making it a convenient outpatient option.
Sclerotherapy is not “one treatment for everyone.” At your visit we first confirm what type of veins you have and whether there are signs of underlying vein disease that should be addressed before treating the surface veins.

Sclerotherapy is especially effective for small veins. Here are the vein types Dr. Ayar most commonly addresses with this treatment — and when we would recommend something else instead.
Small Varicose Veins
Smaller, less deeply seated varicose veins respond well to sclerotherapy. A specialized solution is injected directly into the vein, which scars and collapses over time so blood reroutes to healthier veins nearby.
Spider Veins
The small, thin, web-like clusters of red, blue, or purple veins that sit just beneath the skin. Sclerotherapy is considered one of the most effective treatments for these — a solution is injected to close the vein so it gradually fades.
Reticular & Feeder Veins
These slightly larger blue-green veins often feed the smaller spider veins you can see. Treating them as part of a plan can improve and help sustain your results — which is why we evaluate the pattern rather than just the surface veins.
A Note on Larger Varicose Veins
When varicose veins are large or driven by underlying venous reflux, sclerotherapy alone may not be the right answer. For these, radiofrequency ablation is often more appropriate, and we offer both so your plan matches the actual cause.

Who Is a Candidate for Sclerotherapy?
Ideal candidates are generally healthy adults with visible spider veins or small varicose veins who understand that results appear gradually and often require more than one session. Eligibility is individual, which is why every plan starts with an evaluation.

Not currently pregnant or nursing
No history of blood-clotting disorders or DVT
Aching, heaviness, or discomfort from visible veins
Who may not be a good fit: patients with large varicose veins driven by reflux (who may need radiofrequency ablation), people who cannot walk or move easily, women who are pregnant or nursing, and those with certain heart or circulatory conditions or an active infection.
